Thrace. Lysimachos. Tetradrachm ca. 297-281 BC, uncertain mint. Silver 16.8 g.; 29 mm.
Obverse: Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear //
Reverse: Athena seated left, holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right hand and leaning with her left arm on shield decorated with grain ear; trophy (?) on the throne; behind, transverse spear. Reverse caption: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ
HGC: 3.2-1750.
A specimen with some flats, the striations on the horn have disappeared, but the obverse and reverse remain in excellent condition, particularly Athena with her face still visible. Slightly off-centre, with the beginnings of an iridescent patina. Almost uncirculated AU 50-53
A variety that is apparently unknown and yet unpublished. An extremely rare type with this grain ear on the shield and what appears to be a trophy against the throne.
Other varieties are known, with monograms as well as symbols in the left field, under the outstretched hand (Leu Numismatik, Web Auction 17, 2021, 280; Web Auction 81, 2021, 274), but such a specimen remains for the moment the only one known in sales and the symbol under the throne (possibly a military trophy) is not referenced in the HGC 3.2 list. Variety of the highest rarity.
