This coin is a part of the first issues struck by the Greek settlers of Sicily, notably in the cities of Naxos, Himera, Selinunte and in this case, Zancle, towards the end of the 6th century, and here at the very beginning of the 5th century B.C. They are rare coins since they are part of a rather limited monetary issues, preceding important strikes during the Hellenistic period (350-250) by the cities of Syracuse or Panormos for example.
