Description

Sicily. The Carthaginians in Sicily. AR Tetradrachm (28 mm, 16.74 g, 12 h) ca. 320-310 BC.
Obverse: Head of Tanit-Persephone to left, wearing barley wreath, triple-pendant earring and necklace; around, four swimming dolphins //
Reverse: Head of horse to right; below neck truncation, 'mhmhnt in Punic characters and behind (= 'People of the Camp'), palm tree.

SNR 56, 167 (O50/R131); SNG Fitzwilliam 1485 (same dies).

An exceptional specimen with a superb portrait of the finest style. Beautifully toned and boldly struck, the reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise extremely fine.
