Kingdom of France. Philippe VI, 1328-1350. Double d’or 1340, first issue. Gold 6.77 g.; 33 mm.
Obverse: x PH’: DEI: GRAx - xFRANC:REXx. The king, seated in a Gothic stall with a canopy, crowned, holding a long scepter and a short scepter. The step of the stall is decorated with saltire crosses //
Reverse: + xXPC: VINCIT: XPC: REGNAT: XPC: IMPERAT. A leafed and fleuronnée cross with a rosette at its center, flanked by four small crowns, set within a quadrilobe with foliated and fleuronné corners.

Double d’or with all bright original luster. Exceptionally fine strike. Stunning patina with golden and orange hues. Slight bent. A rare coin, missing from most collections.
