Description

Roman Empire. Maximianus Herculis, 286-310. Aureus 294-295, Kyzikos. Gold 5.57 g.; 19 mm.
Obverse: Head of Maximian, laureate, right. Obverse caption: MAXIMIANVS AVG //
Reverse: Maximian, draped, cuirassed, galloping right, spearing enemy with right hand and holding shield in left hand; below, fallen enemy. Reverse caption: VIRTVS AVGG NN

RIC: 3.

Superb specimen, with minor circulation signs, light traces of wear on the beard of the portrait or on the highest parts of the reverse engraving. Slight scratches in the fields on the obverse and reverse, as well as several marks around the flan, on the edge and on the grenetis around the engravings, located at 2h, 3h, 5h, as well as 7h with a slight crushing, as well as at 9h. Some of these marks are repeated on the reverse, most probably indicating that the coin was formerly mounted as a jewellery. The removal of the coin from its mount was fairly well done, with the marks limited to the periphery of the engravings.
